vivisection tuner

when taking the guitar tuner apart i was imagining a mess of wires as was the case for spi-dog, but to my surprise there was a single circuit bord that had the led, microphone and input output jacks mounted onto it.

under the knife pt2

the second vivisection that i will be doing will be a guitar tuner. i chose this item because it run under the same kind of theme of sound and light. the guitar tuner has a head phone jack as well as an input jack to plug in your electric guitar as well as an output jack to plug into an amp. in addition to this the guitar tuner can also be used for acoustic guitar that don't have the option to plug in.

the guitar tuner also runs on a single 9 volt batter.

results of experiment

when i conducted my experiment i used a mac program called garage band. by doing so i was able to input various sounds into idog. the instruments were chosen were based on common use within a genre. for instance i chose a techno kit because it's a common instrument used in dance music. in the end i chosen a rock drum kit, grand piano, big electric guitar lead and string instruments.

while testing these instruments i also did two variations of rhythm, a constant beat that occurred every one second and a second rhythm that occurred 3 times every second 4 seconds. from this experiment i found that the lower tone beats from the techno kit did not register any response from spi-dog. I also found that the most common occurrence of light being emitted was yellow followed by blue.

other experiments that i conducted was experimenting with different songs from different genres. one of the songs i tested was closer to you by the avalanes. this is song is more of an electronic genre. some of the observations that i made was that the LED would response in time with the drum beats. also the occurrence of the red LED appeared, this was a colour i could not trigger in my garage band experiment. unfortunately i found that the triggering of the red LED was not a constant occurrence as well as the light pattern.

sick as a dog

while conducting experiements on spi-dog he started to give off smoke. spi-dog is currently in intensive care.

taming the beast

today i will be experimenting with the LED found in spi-dog. the method of my experiment is to use the mac program garage band to control the sound input going into spi-dog. while conducting my experiment i will test elements of rythm and instruments. as an end result i hope to understand the triggers implanted in the programming of spi-dog.

vivisection

step_1

removal of 2 AA batteries in right leg. held in with one screw

step_2

removal of movable ears. held in with two screws.

step_3

dismantling of head. held in with two screws. within the head contains a circuit board that contains 7 lights as well as 16 colour coded wires that extend through the neck and into the spi-dogs body

5 items for investigation

object 1 metal detector

response_ this instrument emits loud beeping sound when close to metal objects. this object also requires a whopping 6 AA batteries to operate.

Interest_ i always wanted one of these as a child and i'm interested in the sensor qualities this instrument contains

object 2 spi-dog "what looks like a spider but rocks like a dog"

response_ this children’s toy requires a music device in order to operate. when in the right acoustic environment, spi-dog will dance and flash lights in a chorographer manner. spi-dog also requires human stimulation in order to continue working, this would require a pat.

interest_ i have a musical background and one of the things that always catches my attention is lighting that is used during concerts. maybe spi-dog is my solution to being a rockstar.

object 3 clock radio

response_ emits loud beeping sound as well as radio frequency.

interest_ my main interest in this object finding out how this instrument picks up radio frequencies as well as the LCD display.

object 4 toy guitar

response_ stellar guitar rifts

interest_ when searching the toy section in wall-mart this toy called out to me. i'm interested in seeing if i can add more complex sounds to this toy.

object 5 laser tape measure

response_ displays the distance of a pointed object (15m max)

interest_ find out the relationship of the laser distribution and receiving components.
